Liquid Nitrogen uses

Liquid Nitrogen: Uses and Market

One of the most common decorations during a Halloween party is the spooky smoky effect all around the haunted house that gives quite the visual experience. The science behind it though? Liquid Nitrogen. We learned about it in school and it was one of the cool science experiments we conducted. However, let us find out how Liquid Nitrogen is used in recent times.

Uses

We know that Liquid nitrogen is nitrogen in a liquid state at low temperature. Known for its odorless, colorless, and non-toxic nature, Liquid Nitrogen is known to have its boiling point at about −195.8 °C (−320 °F; 77 K). Why is Liquid Nitrogen popular? Two reasons: low reactivity, and cold temperature.

Transportation and Preservation

Due to its cold temperature, Liquid Nitrogen is used popularly for transporting food products that need to stay in cool conditions. By preventing oxidative damage, the decay of food is thereby prevented ensuring that it stays in a good condition throughout the transportation journey.

Liquid Nitrogen has also proved to be very useful in the medical field when it comes to the cryopreservation of biological material. Fertility centers and sperm banks are known to use Liquid Nitrogen for preservation purposes. Other than these, other biological specimens such as blood, stem cells, and even nerves stay protected with the help of Liquid Nitrogen.

Electric and Plumbing Uses

Due to its cooling effects, Liquid Nitrogen is also used to help cool superconductors such as vacuum pumps. It is also used to help freeze pipes if they need to be repaired and valves are unavailable at the time. Even machinery looks up to Liquid Nitrogen to help cool its internal materials, resulting in it running easily and smoothly.

Protection from Oxygen Exposure

Several materials, especially metals are prone to rust and damage caused by oxidation or oxygen exposure. Liquid Nitrogen acts as a sort of protective gear thereby shielding a variety of materials from oxygen exposure.

Education

In schools and universities, Liquid Nitrogen is often used to help children understand how this works and for fun experiments such as creating nitrogen fog and watching flash-frozen flowers shatter when tapped onto a hard surface.

Food Experiments

Liquid Nitrogen has also been used to take presentation levels to the next level in the F&B industry. Several restaurants use Liquid nitrogen in making Ice creams and to give cocktails a cool look, thereby making the restaurant unique and pulling in more customers.

Market Value and Future Potential

The Liquid Nitrogen Market size is expected to grow significantly from 2020 to 2024. As per a market research report by Stallion Market research, the global Liquid Nitrogen market value is currently at around USD 20 billion and is expected to grow with a compound annual growth rate of 3.75%.

While the use of this cryogenic fluid has proved to be very useful in several sectors and is relied upon by many industries, factors such as certain hazards related to Liquid Nitrogen can prove to be a factor that can dampen the market growth.

As of now, with the growing population and food needs, the Food and Beverage industry is on its toes nonstop. Manufacturing of food is on the rise, resulting in the rise of production and safeguarding of food material which is provided majorly by Nitrogen Liquid. Due to its eco-friendly and quick-freeze nature, it is preferred and sought out the most. This will prove to be the boost Liquid Nitrogen needs to grow in the market and as per Industry Analysis, Liquid Nitrogen will grow further during the forecast period.
